Pregnancy

The treatment of pregnant women and the common complaints during pregnancy is a specialty of the Total Health Clinics. Many of our enquiries are often with concern at the difficulty of treating women who are pregnant. However, they make some of the easiest patients to care for!

During pregnancy the body circulates a hormone known as relaxin, and much like the famous fence paint, it does what it says on the tin! It deliberately softens the supporting ligaments to the lumbar spine and pelvis and therefore predisposes the patient to instability. The muscles of the low back and pelvis become over worked as they try to support a back that has changed shape and weight.

There are many benefits to having regular massage during pregnancy.  Improved circulation – reduces swollen hands and feet, lessen the effects of morning sickness, minimise back pains, reduce the likelihood of stretch marks, relieves symptoms of insomnia & fatigue, boosts your immune system, assists with an easier birth by encouraging you to be relaxed and calm. One of the most common conditions affecting our pregnant patients is Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD). It is a very painful and inflammed condition that affects the pubic arch at the front of the pelvis. It is a condition that responds well to treatment, making pregnancy and labour much easier.

Pregnancy massage, Osteopathy and physiotherapy are very useful at alleviating these side effects and are often beneficial at stabilising the area once the baby has arrived also.

For more information regarding the treatment of pregnancy related conditions just call your local clinic and they can happily advise you further.
